Message from the teacher

Guitar is one of the most popular musical instruments. It is played all over the world and used in various styles of music like classical, jazz, rock, folk, bossa nova, flamenco, and so on.
There also are many different types of guitars like acoustic guitar, electric guitar, classical guitar, 12-string guitar, and so on.
Whatever types of guitar you are playing, you will become capable of adopting as long as you have enough knowledge and techniques.
We invite you to learn the basics and much more at Shimamura music school to enjoy playing guitar.

Through the many years of teaching and performing experience, Akihito will provide appropriate lessons to the students in all levels from the very beginners to advanced students.
He is capable of teaching not only the guitar techniques but also music theory, arranging, notation, ensemble performance, and so on.
He will provide everything to enjoy music.

Teacher Profile

Akihito earned Bachelor of Music from New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, Massachusetts in 1979.
He studied guitar with Barry Galbraith, Chuck Wayne and Gene Bertoncini, ensembles, music theory, improvisation, arranging, music history, and so on with legendary George Russell, Jaki Byard, Jimmy Giuffre, Ernie Wilkins, Carl Atkins, Ran Blake.
He performed in the George Russell Living Time Orchestra and Jaki Byard Apollo Stompers while in Boston.
He also translated and published many music related books into Japanese. Lydian Chromatic Concept by George Russell and Guitar Workshop by Jim Kelly to just name a few.

Akihito attended the annual conventions of IAJE（International Associations of Jazz Education）and IASJ（International Associations of Schools of Jazz）representing Japanese jazz schools and jazz educators.
He performed at the KL Jazz Festival and the KL Jazz Club, both are the annual International Jazz Day events in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
He is an experienced educator who has educated many music students at CATS Music College in Osaka, Koyo Conservatory in Kobe, International College of Music in Kuala Lumpur, and so on for many years.
