FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Q. What items are eligible for tax-free shopping?
A.

At Shimamura Music tax-free stores, eligible items are divided into two categories: "General Goods" (Instruments, etc.) and "Consumables".
Please confirm the following rules and limitations for each category.

■ General Goods

Total spending must be 5,000 JPY or more (excluding tax).
*Examples: Guitars, saxophones, keyboards, cases, etc.

■ Consumables

Total spending must be between 5,000 JPY and 500,000 JPY (excluding tax).
*Examples: Picks, polish, strings, reeds, etc.

  • Consumables will be strictly sealed in a special bag so they cannot be consumed in Japan.
*Combining Categories:

General Goods and Consumables can be combined to meet the minimum requirement of 5,000 JPY to 500,000 JPY (excluding tax), provided that all items are packed together in a special sealed bag that must remain unopened until you leave Japan.

Q. Who is eligible for tax-free shopping?
A.

According to Japanese Tax Law, "Non-residents" are eligible for tax-free shopping.

■ Customers with Foreign Nationality

You must have a status of residence of "Temporary Visitor (Short-Term Stay)", "Diplomatic", or "Official".
*(Your passport must have an entry stamp/seal showing this status, or you can use the tax-free QR code on the "Visit Japan Web" ).

■ Customers with Japanese Nationality

You must meet both of the following requirements:

  1. Safely provide official documentary proof (e.g., a Certificate of Residence or a copy of your Family Register Supplement) showing that you have continuously maintained a residence outside of Japan for 2 years or more.
(The document must have been issued within the last 6 months prior to your entry into Japan.)
  2. It has been less than 6 months since your latest entry into Japan.
*(Note: You must have an entry stamp/seal on your passport to prove the exact date of your entry. If you use the automated gates at the airport upon arrival, you will not receive a stamp. Please make sure to ask an immigration officer for a stamp. Without it, tax-free shopping will be denied.)
Q. How do I shop tax-free?
A.

When checking out at a Shimamura Music tax-free store, please follow these steps:

Required Documents

  1. Your physical Passport containing the entry stamp/seal. (Copies are not accepted. Shopping tax-free will be denied without it.)
  2. If you have an international customer coupon issued by the shopping center, please present it along with your passport.

Tax-Free Procedure

Before making a payment, please inform our staff that you wish to shop tax-free.

Q. Important notices for tax-free shopping
A.

Please read the following carefully before purchasing at our store.

Before Buying

  1. "TAX-FREE SHOP" means that the 10% Japanese consumption tax is exempted. This differs from "DUTY-FREE," which exempts import duties.
  2. We do not provide information regarding customs duties, import restrictions, or origin of materials for foreign countries. Please check your airline's baggage size limitations and your home country's customs rules by yourself.
  3. [Attention for Instruments] Some instruments may use highly restricted materials protected under the Washington Convention (CITES), such as Brazilian Rosewood (Jacaranda). Please note that bringing such materials into your home country is heavily restricted or prohibited.
  4. Tax-free procedures can only be processed on the same day of purchase and at the same store.
  5. Product warranties are valid only in Japan. If an item needs repair, it must be sent to the manufacturer in Japan via our store. All international shipping and repair costs will be your responsibility.

When Departing from Japan

  1. Do not open the sealed bag for consumables (or combined items). If you consume them in Japan, you will be required to pay the consumption tax at customs.
  2. You must take the tax-free goods out of Japan within your stay period.
  3. You must have the purchased items with you at the time of departure.
